Today provides me another opportunity to reflect on how much day-to-day life changes when you’re in vet school. Today, April 30, is my birthday! Today is also the continuation of this little thing schools like to call finals. Today’s battle was toxicology, and what a battle it was. It’s always a bit tricky having a birthday in the midst of the finals storm, especially when the first subjects up are difficult ones, but its always good if you can find a little time to celebrate.
This is the time of year that’s always most difficult for me, because I know I’m in the final stretch and motivation tends to be at a low point. Admittedly, it feels like it’s been a long semester, and the general thought in my class is “PLEASE just give me summer!” I think this finals cycle will work better than last semester, as the more difficult subject areas are first. Last semester, one of our major subjects was last on the schedule, and by the time I got to it I had no energy, no motivation, and was completely sleep deprived. To this day I don’t know how that final went.
I would say that, for me, this is the time of year that having a good study group comes in handy. I normally do a mix of studying alone and studying in a group, but right now the motivation is difficult to gather alone. So, for anyone who feels the same, my advice would be to group up (or you can do this individually if you still have the discipline at this point) and set goals for your study sessions. Believe it or not, accomplishing those goals while you study is a great motivator. We’re in the final stretch! Start your IV drip of coffee (not literally), and make it happen.
