As 2018 begins, it’s impossible to not think about all the exciting things that I have accomplished in the last year. I’ve finished the classroom portion of veterinary school, I’ve started clinics, and most importantly I’ve finished my NAVLE licensing exam. While all of these are big accomplishments, 2018 will be even bigger and better than any year before it.
I’m starting off the year externing at a dairy clinic where I would ideally like to end up working someday. After that, I’m interviewing at another clinic in Vermont. By the end of my stay in Vermont, I will hopefully have passing results from my NAVLE exam. After heading back to school, I’ll end clinics learning about sheep and goats, necropsy, and food animal ambulatory medicine – all things that I really enjoy. Most importantly, however, I will finally accomplish my dreams. Graduation is on May 11th. That’s a little over 4 months away. Before I know it I’ll have my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
Shortly thereafter I will start my first veterinary job. For once, I’ll actually be making money and can start paying down my astronomical loan figures. I’ll also be in a new town, somewhere that is hopefully somewhere farther north and closer to home than Virginia. After dying to get out of Vermont for my entire life, I’ve become bored in Virginia and am ready for my next big adventure.
Veterinary school has been a stressful yet life-changing experience. However, after all this hard work I’m ready for it to end and to move on. 2018 will mark the start of my career and the fruition of everything I’ve ever worked for, and I couldn’t be more excited.
