There’s no denying that vet school can cause extreme exhaustion and stress for most of us. We are expected to evolve into little doctors while also taking on life. I’ve learned from my three years in vet school that everyone handles stress differently and is facing their own battles. This is where I want to remind everyone to always choose kindness. It’s easy to focus on yourself during the busy and hard times, it’s easy to avoid eye contact or saying hi to you colleagues, and it’s easy to assume that everyone is fine. When was the last time you asked one of your classmates how things were going? Have you noticed a classmate struggling or having a hard time? Are you having a hard time?
The environment we are in often makes us feel as if we do not have the time or energy to face challenges presented to us outside of school work. Speaking from my own experiences, it’s meant so much to me when my classmates reached out to ask if I was doing okay or needed support. Knowing that I had people around me who genuinely cared and were willing to help me made my struggles feel less unbearable. I encourage you to periodically check in on the people around you. You’ll be surprised to find the struggles people are facing and how much of an impact you can make just by checking in. Choose kindness every day.
