I recently had the opportunity to attend a training event in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was an incredible experience. I got to see an awesome city I had never visited, network with students and future colleagues from around the country, learn a lot, and have a lot of fun–all for free. There were some meetings, some wet labs, and some group trips. All in all, it was a wonderful time.
Most of the meetings were broken up into short presentations that lasted from twenty minutes to an hour in length. They were given by various veterinarians based upon what their specialty and job was within the hosting company. Before the presenters started their Powerpoint presentation, they would introduce themselves and give a short biography about their professional career and how they got to be where they were. One thing I noticed was that they all seemed to start their presentation with a phrase similar to “I never imagined I would one day be working in industry.” Those veterinarians went to vet school to be the corner vet, the small town mixed animal doctor, an equine specialist, emergency doctor, etc, and they all ended up in industry for one reason or another.
I found this interesting because it emphasizes a point I have found to be very true in my veterinary career so far, and that is there are a lot of things you can do with a DVM and you never know what opportunities will pop up. If you plan ahead too much and direct your plans in only one direction, you may miss different opportunities you had not considered. With that in mind, I encourage all students to keep an open mind to various opportunities they may not have considered as a possible career path. You just may end up living your dream in a place you never imagined.
