Today was my first day at my new job at a local small animal hospital. Having come from a quieter, single-doctor practice, things were very hectic and there was a lot to do. Of course, I loved every minute of it.
Over the last few years, I haven’t done any work in a small animal hospital. The few instances that I have were our in-class labs and activities. Instead I’ve been focusing on large animals. Ultimately, the ambulatory aspect of large animal medicine is my passion and where I know I will end up. However, as a veterinarian, we are responsible for all species, and much of our school work is small-animal based. As a result, I know I need to get more comfortable with small animals and that’s why I am at this hospital this summer.
One of the main reasons I chose to work at this hospital is because it is a multi-doctor practice. Something is always going on, and it never seems like there is down time. As you can expect, this is the perfect setting to learn and see cases. Additionally, seeing different doctors in action and the different styles they use when interacting with clients and treating patients has been very valuable. Plus the opportunity to work with so many doctors will also give me many options for resume references in the future.
The first day was certainly exhausting, but I know it will be a great experience. All of the staff members are helpful and happy to teach someone like me who hasn’t had much experience. While I know small animal isn’t my specific calling, I am excited to learn as much as I can.
