With back to back externals at home and a small vacation, I have found myself at home in Vermont for much longer than I am used to. For the last few years, it has been for a few weeks at a time and with nothing much to do besides rest and relax. This time I’m actually here to work, job interviews, and gain as much experience as I can.
To be brutally honest, it feels very weird to be up here for more than a week at a time. I haven’t seen any of my veterinary school friends in ages and haven’t talked to them. I haven’t had to set foot in the dreadful veterinary teaching hospital and I won’t have to do so for at least another month. Because of the weather, I haven’t even seen all of my family members and I’ve been here for almost two weeks.
Despite my time being rather limited while up here, it has been great being able to catch up with family members that I haven’t seen in months. I haven’t seen one of my older brothers in years so it was pretty nice to visit with him. My next external will be in central Vermont, so I will be spending those three weeks living with my one of my aging grandmothers. She lives all by herself so it will be nice to give her some company before I head back to Virginia.
Because I don’t have a job locked down yet, these six weeks back home are pretty bittersweet. I don’t know where I will end up after graduation and I don’t know when I will have the next opportunity to come back and see everyone. Despite the unknown, I’m going to take advantage of every second I have here and deal with the future as it comes.
