I remember my first day working at a veterinary clinic while in high school. I remember the day I found out I was going to interview at the Atlantic Veterinary College. I remember my first day of veterinary school like it was yesterday, and now I’m a veterinarian.
I’ve just started work at a small animal exclusive practice with my long-time mentor. I’m happy and excited to be coming on as an associate and working with a great team of people and a wonderful community of people and their pets. My first day brought about a lot of feelings, excitement, and nervousness being the majority of that. Putting on my scrubs that say “Dr. Emmons” and my white coat definitely made me feel the part and boosted my confidence. Thankfully, my first day was pretty quiet, which eased me in to seeing appointments.
Overall, it went much better than my worried brain had expected. I always do that to myself, amping things up to be worse than they ever are. I was happy with how my appointments went, only fumbled my words a couple times and looking back on my day, felt pretty successful overall. I was a little awkward at times, but I know once I get used to the flow of things and start to get into the groove I’ll have my words together more and have a good order of operations when I go into appointments. I’m so excited to have finally started my career and am looking forward to the rest of my life serving animals and their people.
