Now that I’ve had a few offers come in, I’m starting to get contracts. While this is as exciting as ever, it’s pretty scary knowing that I’ll be signing my first contract. I don’t know what I’m getting myself into, I don’t know what to really look for or what I want. Thankfully, the school offers plenty of resources and there are plenty of instructors that want to take a look at our contracts so they can make sure we are getting the fairest shake.
The worst part about the whole process is when the employer asks what kind of salary you expect. They are essentially asking what you think you are worth, which is really difficult to determine. I know I’m not going to be at my best on day one and it will take time to improve. But how do you go about asking for a set amount when you barely have any skills? It’s also difficult when they ask what else I would like to add to the contract. Will my suggestions be scoffed at or denied? What is appropriate for me to ask for?
It seems like every aspect of the job hunt has left me filled with nagging questions. I’m an incredibly indecisive person and this entire process has been killing me. Ultimately, I won’t know what I want or how to go about it the first time around. I think at this point I’ve made up my mind and all that’s left is to sign on the line and make the most of my first year as an actual veterinarian.
