With the fresh start of a new year and new semester, I like to sit down and set goals for myself. Typically these goals include focusing more closely on a certain subject or my studying techniques. Now that I’m halfway through fourth-year, these types of goals aren’t exactly applicable. Less of my time is spent in the library. Most days are spent in the student room working diligently on my patient records. For this reason, I need to tailor my goals to meet my current lifestyle. So here is my updated list for 2019…
- Efficient Record Writing
One of my least favorite things about fourth-year is the number of hours spent writing medical records. I spend more time in the student room typing away than I spend with my patients. This is mostly due to the immense amount of work it takes to write meticulous records, but also due to my lack of efficiency. I need to spend my free time working on my records as opposed to being social or reading. This way I will spend less time at school and be able to get home earlier each night.
- Figure Out the Next Step
One of the most stressful aspects of our final year of veterinary school: figure out what is next. I’ve applied for several internships and have interviews scheduled. This is such an exciting but nerve-wracking time of my life. By February I will know if I have been matched with an internship and also if I have passed the NAVLE. The next chapter of my life will begin and I will need to be prepared.
- Find Work-Life Balance
This year I’ve really been neglecting myself. I haven’t gone to the gym regularly in months and have stopped meal prepping. I drink way too much coffee and eat way too much junk food. My free time is spent sleeping or lounging around at home. I’ve put my personal life and health on the back burner this year. It is not a sustainable lifestyle and I need to take care of myself if I hope to survive life as a veterinary professional.
- Work Hard, Play Harder
In just four months I will be a veterinarian. This calls for a celebration. Luckily I have a classmate who is just as adventurous and travel-oriented as I am. We are currently planning a graduation trip to South America. This will be the perfect way to treat ourselves for all of the hard work we put in over the course of the past four years.
