Congratulations on starting your first year of vet school! That’s a big step and I know how excited, enthusiastic and a little nervous you are! I am writing to tell you a few important things about vet school. I only need 380 characters to give you a heads up for your near future.
In the next few weeks, you won’t have a lot of time and you will study for really LONG hours. But it will be okay…just try to be organized and use your time wisely by setting up alarms to take study breaks or switch your study topics. In addition to that, you must avoid distractions and probably limit your phone use and social media. So, you can download an app to monitor how much time you spend on your phone such as In Moment and Freedom. During those intermittent studying hours, you will get tired or exhausted and you might need to change your study methods. For instance, use a whiteboard to create study charts or diagrams, read the information aloud pretending to be a teacher or make your own mnemonics and funny stories. If you have a chance, why don’t change your study environment? After all, you should be creative and make the most of every day!
The anatomy lab might become your second home for the next year and I assure you that you will get used to being there! You will spend most of your time dissecting muscles, nerves, and arteries. But you will also learn the basics of your veterinary medicine training.
And sometimes, you may or may not have enough time to cook or eat…So, bring healthy snacks that can be a source of protein and antioxidants. Peanut butter and cottage cheese with integral crackers are both good sources of proteins. Eat raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries because these fruits help to bolster your energy and memory.
Finally, when difficult times come don’t give up easily and be willing to persevere! Always remember that everything will pass…including those tedious anatomy exams, physiology quizzes, and oral presentations. When you feel that you are falling off track, stick to the plan (goal) of becoming a doctor of animals. And strive to follow that goal and all your dreams!
