We all quietly waited in the classroom. The table in front of us was covered with a large cake and plenty of other drinks and snacks. Our class gift also sat on the table. A few moments later, our old teacher was led into the classroom by one of our lab assistants.
As everyone shouted “Surprise!” a look of shock and awe spread across his face. This teacher was just about to retire, so my class was the last class he would be a part of teaching directly. Unbeknown to him, a few members of our class decided to throw him a little surprise party to thank him for being such a caring teacher.
After thanking us for the kind gesture and admitting he had no clue this was actually happening, we had him open the class gift. After finding a gift card to his favorite restaurant, he put the bag down, not anticipating anything else. But everyone instructed him to dig a little deeper.
On his second look, he pulled out the animal skull we’d gotten for him. As an anatomy teacher and the professor of the Morphology of Mammals class, the pressure was on for him to correctly tell us what animal it was.
Of course he got it right. It was a peccary skull, or a new world pig. He thanked us again, while his lips were covered with blue cake frosting. As one of my favorite teachers in school so far, it was nice to thank him for everything he has done for us. But besides being a great teacher, he was even better because he always made funny jokes, took extra time to help us, and even more time to get to know everyone as an individual. School certainly won’t be the same without him, but we are all very happy to have had the chance to get to know and learn from him.
