Without tickets to the biggest football game of the year, I’m sitting at a bar with my friends. Of course, our team is losing and there isn’t much hope for a comeback. In a season where we’ve done very well, it would be nice to win this game. As the game moves into a commercial break, I see the Hokie defense lunch pail. And before I know it, I see myself grabbing the pail off a hay bale and walking off screen with it. Before I know it, I’m pointing and screaming, “That’s me! That’s me!” as my table starts to go crazy.
A few weeks earlier, I was on our equine medicine and surgery block when they told us that some guy would be filming scenes there the next day. He was looking for students to join in so we all went down. The guy filming was from LA and there was even a woman doing makeup. A few of my classmates jumped at the opportunity so I just hung around and watched.
The filmmaker got a few shots of our resident showing the students how to do a physical exam on a horse. Next, they brought out the Hokie defense lunch pail, an old rusty lunch box that the team has used to symbolize our strong defense for the last 20 years. They wanted someone to pick the pail up off a hay bale and walk away, then do another take where they put it back on the bale and join the rest of the group. One girl tried out but she just was just too short and as the only remaining tall student around I got thrust into the role. I wasn’t expecting to have to do this but I just went with it and did everything the guy asked me to do. Picking up the pail and setting it down, it was a really easy job.
After they had enough footage, the filmmaker started talking about what it would be used for. They were putting together a short montage of the different programs at the school and incorporating the defense pail into each program as a way to promote the school academically. He also mentioned that it could be put on the big screen at each of the school’s home football games.
For the rest of the day, all of us that were involved walked around telling everyone how we were going to be movie stars. While I thought it would be cool to end up seeing myself at the football games, I wasn’t expecting to see myself on national television during our school’s biggest game of the year.
