I’ve been extremely fortunate to attend many different conferences during my time in undergrad and in veterinary school. Since I’ve been in vet school, I’ve attended 3 SAVMA Symposiums, 2 AVMA Conventions, IVECCS Symposium, and a CDC conference. Each of these experiences were different but I always make sure to prepare for them the same way. Here are 3 of my favorite tips to help you network at your next conference.
Plan Ahead
When it comes to attending conferences there will be a lot of different events you will want to attend. Whether it be lectures, wet labs, activities, or the exhibit hall–
Business Cards
Before you attend any conference, make sure to get a set of business cards made with your information. Whether you’re in your first, second, third, or fourth year of vet school, everyone can benefit from having their own business cards. You never know who you’re going to meet that wants your information and you’ll regret not having these handy (trust me). If you want to really step up your game, invest in a business card holder to house your cards!
Follow Up
Always make sure to follow up with a thank you card or message via email or LinkedIn after you’ve met someone you really enjoyed speaking with or want to stay in touch with. Taking the initiative to personally reach out to someone and send them a short message goes such a long way. Put yourself out there and engage with others in this industry!
