I’m already halfway through my clinical year and I feel more exhausted than ever. Is part of it attributed to my clinic schedule? Sometimes. But oddly enough, I think the majority of my exhaustion comes from having little energy because I’ve been neglecting to properly care for myself outside of the clinics. I have gotten into a bad habit of not working out and periodically eating when I have time. I have failed to actively try to restructure my daily life schedule in order to fit in workouts and have failed to prepare ahead of time so meals can be ready for the week. I did all these things during the first three years of vet school so I know I can do it now too. It’s now just about starting!
I recently listened to an awesome podcast by Lo Curtis from the Thrive DVM Podcast about creating a morning routine. I am a podcast junkie and ironically enough, I love listening to any podcast that talks about cultivating success and self-improvement. This was the podcast episode that REALLY resonated with me. It was like a huge wake-up call. I’d heard so many different podcasts talking about the most successful people in the world having morning routines. In theory, I’d love to do this but never thought I had it in me. I loved the Thrive DVM Podcast, because Lo, who is a veterinary neurologist, talked about her struggles with hating the mornings to her transformation of creating a routine where she wakes up before the world does to get things done. I am now in the process of trying to wake up 2-3 hours before I’m in clinics so I can work out, study, and eat. If I can start taking better care of myself, this will pour over into my daily life of taking better care of those around me.
