The thought of being a veterinarian has always been my dream. So much so that it feels very odd that I’m officially out of school and I have my degree in hand. It’s taken 20 plus years of hard work and studying to get to this point. I’ve become so used to studying and always working towards my ultimate goal and now I feel sort of empty with that aspect of my life behind me.
Ultimately, veterinary school went by very quickly and so did the whole process of becoming a vet. It didn’t seem like it when I was sitting through lectures and taking tests but it feels that way now as I look back on everything that I’ve accomplished. A lot has happened over the last eight years. I completed my undergraduate education and I worked at a few small animal hospitals. I really cemented my desire to be a large animal veterinarian by working on my school’s dairy, horse barn, and a small angora goat and alpaca farm. I moved to Virginia for veterinary school, developed my skills and now I’m heading back up north to start my veterinary career. I’ve come a long way and now I’m exactly where I want to be.
Being a veterinarian is no longer a dream. As scary as it sounds, it’s now my reality. Soon I will have my own vehicle with veterinary equipment. I will be working with clients, developing relationships and will soon be trusted to take care of their animals. With my job starting in a few days, I’m living my dreams with open eyes and I couldn’t be happier.
