The world can be a cruel place at times. I see the news of another species that has become extinct, one after another at an alarming rate. Overpopulation of us humans and the fundamental lack of care for our environment. People are hurting people, people are hurting animals, I want to close my eyes to this nonsense, but that is impossible. I can not understand why people do not care, and why they do not see that we, as a species, need to change.
We fight over new laws, fight over religion, political views, and environmental issues. We deem certain dog breeds aggressive and unfit while we ourselves seem to be the most uncivilized. My heart aches for this spot in time we have arrived at, surely, we have been informed that life simply cannot continue in this manner. What are we to do when the news of the world causes us to become depressed? Why, oh, why are there so very many people who turn a blind eye to this dire situation?
After much soul-searching, I have come to the understanding that I am not in control of others. I can only change the small world that I call my own, I could focus on the things I cannot do and become laden with a heavy heart, or I can seek out change for myself. The choice seems rather straight-forward: eat less meat, recycle, reuse what you can, compost, shop local, etc. There is always something one can do to be a better human. We spend a great deal of time and money training our dogs to be better canine citizen’s. It seems imperative that we spend a few moments finding new ways to improve our planet and become better citizen’s ourselves.
I firmly believe that we are here to be champions for the environment and its animals, and it is high time that we take steps to live up to that. I could write a novel about things we should be doing, but that knowledge is readily available for those who seek change. If you are like me, distraught by world events, go outside and start the change there. You are not alone; I will be out walking my street, picking up trash thrown by careless humans. Let the change begin with you.
