Veterinary care can be very expensive and many can’t afford to give their pets the care that they would like to. Many times, owners are put into situations where they have to choose between their pet’s care and their own welfare. Despite how much they want to do everything they can, many people are living on maxed out budgets or barely squeaking by financially. At the same time, I can’t remember how many times where I’ve seen people that have absolutely nothing trying to do all they can for their animal.
But at our school, there is a solution for these situations. The answer is a special fund called the Compassionate Care Fund. If an owner can’t afford veterinary care or if an animal doesn’t have an owner then these funds can be used to cover the expenses. While this serves to help out owners and patients, it also helps out the students because we get to see more cases and get more practice than we otherwise would.
Many different veterinarians and clinics from the area contribute to this fund throughout the year. The fund also accepts donations from anyone that would like to give. On the student side of things, a major way to donate is our biggest philanthropy event of the year, Casino Night. At this event, all the typical casino type games are present and our faculty volunteers to be dealers. Using tickets, students are able to play games and win more tickets, which can then be entered into drawings for various veterinary prizes. This event is a lot of fun and is only a few short weeks away. It’s a great way to have fun but also a great way to help out a great cause.
