I’m a perfectionist. I’m not going to sit here and deny that. I’ve known it for most of my life and, for the most part, it fosters the development of many traits that have made me successful thus far. However, I know that it is not without its faults, most of which contribute to added stress and feelings of inadequacy. Reflecting on all of the little bits and pieces, quirks and characteristics, that make me who I am, I developed a personal mission statement to help me to navigate challenges and grow in how I approach the world around me.
Creating my mission statement was a journey in itself. I knew that it would require a lot of self-reflection and confrontation about what inspires me, frustrates me, and where my strengths and weaknesses lie. For that reason, this endeavor was not about the final product, it was about the process. For this reason, I encourage all of you to compose one of your own.
My mission statement is as follows:
Give me the strength to accept that there will always be things that I cannot change, but also the power to evoke positive change where I can.
Enable me to radiate peace, serenity, and calmness in a world that is so fast-paced, busy and focused on immediacy.
Teach me to cultivate trust in those with whom I interact, human and animal, and to work on allowing myself to take down walls I’ve built instead of building more.
Keeping these words in mind here’s to honoring my past, embracing my present, and welcoming the future.
