Thanksgiving is always a reflective time of the year for me and likely one of the reasons that I enjoy its festivities so much. This year, in particular, I have faced so many challenges and opportunities to grow individually, academically, and professionally. Balancing school, work, and family obligations while still giving myself the time I deserve to relax and do what brings me joy can be an exhausting juggling act. Often, when days are hectic, I find myself defaulting my focus to all of the things that are not going the way that I want them to. And thus, a downward spiral of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy follow.
However, what I have found is that thinking this way just serves to blind me to everything beautiful that is going on in my life. And that’s the thing, there is so much beauty for which to be thankful. Every single day, I have the fortune of waking up and being a part of something so much larger than myself. That is amazing! I get to touch the lives of animals and people, all while doing something that I love. Similarly, I am fortunate to have the ability to broaden my knowledge and be in the presence of incredibly intelligent and inspirational professors and classmates who challenge me to expand my comfort zone. Every day, I have the chance to grow and push myself.
By simply taking a few moments to reflect on what is going “right” every day, I am reminded just how spectacular each opportunity is, even those that test and try me. A little positive thinking goes a long way. I have an amazing support system of family and friends that cheer me on each and every day. They inspire me to be the best version of myself and because they believe in me, I can continue to believe in me. Gratitude is powerful and, for that, I will be forever grateful.
