I was fortunate enough to be able to go back to my hometown for spring break. Whenever my classmates inquired about my plans for the break, I loved their confused looks when I informed them I would be traveling FROM California to Wisconsin to spend the week there. However, I was excited to be able to spend time with my family and friends, because Wisconsin will always hold a piece of my heart…regardless of how wonderful California’s weather may be.
While I was home, I was able to take part in my dad’s wedding celebration. Being surrounded my all my relatives, it definitely helped me to put a lot of things into perspective. School can be stressful and busy, but it is just as important to know how to take a break as it is to know how to study. I was so happy to be able to unwind and enjoy their company for a few days.
My family means the world to me, and I know that I don’t tell them that enough. I wouldn’t be here in vet school at one of the most highly regarded institutions in the country fulfilling a lifelong dream had it not been for their support. It is so easy to immerse yourself in exams and grades and studying that you let what really matters fall by the wayside. Spring break helped open my eyes to the importance of keeping the people who matter most to you at the forefront, amidst the stress.
The support of my family and friends, even from halfway across the country, make me a more driven and passionate student. I know, that with them by my side (albeit metaphorically for the time being), I have the power to become the best veterinarian I can possibly be. So, to each and every one of them…thank you. Thank you for challenging me. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for encouraging me when I doubt myself. You have touched my life in more ways than you could hardly imagine, and I treasure every moment I spend with you.
