I recently had the opportunity to learn more about telemedicine in the capacity of veterinary medicine. In our business course, we had a local small animal practitioner come in and talk to us about his experience with telemedicine. Up until this time, I hadn’t heard much about it and really thought of it as a tool that’s used solely in human medicine.
To my surprise, I learned so much from his lecture and my interest in this tool has substantially increased. For example, he explained how he uses telemedicine as a way to conduct follow up appointments more conveniently for clients. Basically, the clients have access to an app that charges them per session when they contact the doctor. He gave us an example of postop surgical visits to check on the incision site. Instead of the client and patient coming in again, the client has the ability to communicate with the doctor over the app and send pictures of the incision. He or she also has the ability to follow up with any questions or concern.
There’s a lot more that goes into the logistics of this type of medicine but I was thoroughly surprised by the capacity this tool has! This is definitely something I am going to be more interested in looking into as a veterinarian.
