Where has the time gone? It feels like I just began my veterinary school journey. Yet, in a matter of days, I will get to walk across the stage, accept my diploma and officially become a doctor…yikes!! In many respects, I wish I could push the “pause” button because I don’t feel ready to leave my role as a student. I don’t feel like I’m ready for the real world. And yet, at the same time, I’m excited for the chance to test out my doctor wings. The learning won’t stop just because I leave school, in fact, it will probably occur at an even more exponential rate.
I am so grateful for all of the opportunities that I’ve been given throughout veterinary school. I have learned so much about animals, about medicine, and about myself. I have been pushed to the limit, stretched my comfort zones, and learned to trust others and myself. I became a part of the most amazing team I could have asked for. My class is so much more than a group of people that have similar interests to my own; over the past four years, they have become family. I know that I could count on any of them in a moment of need. We rely on each other, support each other and cheer for each other.
We’ve seen each other practically every day for the entirety of vet school. Now, we’re going to be scattering as we embark on our own paths following graduation. It’s strange to think about leaving these wonderful people who have brought light to my darkest days, but I’m excited for all of us too.
UC Davis Class of 2018, I love you all. Each of you has touched my life in such a special way, even if you don’t realize it. I am grateful for every single one of you. From our first days of veterinary school with trust falls and blindfolded team-building exercises, to our days (and nights) in the clinic, you have shown me what veterinary medicine is all about. All of you inspire me with your dedication, your amazing experiences, impressive skills, and tireless efforts. I am honored to know you and to have been able to share a little bit of your story. As we move forward and continue our veterinary journeys, I wish you all the best. Never stop learning, never stop trying, and never forget the passion that brought you into this noble profession of ours. No matter how far you travel, or where life takes you, remember that our profession is smaller than you think and all of us are just a phone call away. You will all go on to continue doing amazing things, so remember, no matter what, you have made a difference, you are changing lives, and you are always enough. Thank you for inspiring me, for encouraging me, and for keeping me smiling during this crazy vet school adventure.
Goodbye veterinary school, hello world!
