My Davis bucket list has included biking from Davis to Sacramento for the past year. A few weeks ago, one of my friends and I decided to make this dream a reality. I was super excited for the prospect of the 30-mile bike ride.
Everything started off great…the sun was shining, we had lots of extra water, and we were making great time. We ended up keeping such a fast pace that we got to Sacramento faster than we originally figured. My friend had a local brewery/restaurant that he wanted to try out, so we biked a little further only to discover that it was closed. We had already biked 15 miles, so we figured biking five more to another restaurant would be no problem.
Unfortunately, along the way my friend got a flat tire. We were close enough to a bike shop that we walked the bikes there and got the tire fixed. Luckily, next door was a highly recommended restaurant, and we stopped for dinner.
After refueling, we headed out for our return trip. Three miles into the trip, we encountered yet another slight deviation from plan as my friends other tire became flat. It was too late to find another bike shop, so we had to call a friend to come and pick us up.
Things can’t always go as planned. Yet even though it seemed like everything about our bike ride went wrong, each deviation from the plan created a new adventure and a new story. And now, looking back on the trip, I’ve come to embrace the adventure that it was.
