Welcome Back! Whether you a veterinary student or an undergraduate dreaming of one day going to veterinary school, I hope that your school year is off to a smooth start.
After the first day of my second year of veterinary school I was thinking about the journey of the last year. In the first year of veterinary school day #1 was a big deal! I made sure all my notes were organized properly, packed a nutritious lunch, knew what I was going to wear, ate a well-balanced breakfast etc. I arrived plenty early and mentally prepared for the big day ahead of me. I’d finally made it! This was going to be awesome!
It’s amazing what experience can do to you. This year day #1 was nothing. I did put my notes into a binder the night before, but I was hunting through a fairly empty refrigerator that morning looking for something for breakfast (and lunch!), searching through a suitcase I hadn’t bothered to unpack from my summer travels for clothes to wear, and hitting the gym before class not at all a bit concerned about the day ahead.
The first day of vet school is a big day especially when it is what you have dreamed of for so long, but in the end the novelty will wear off quickly. My advice to any undergraduate student dreaming of that day is the following…keep your eye on the goal and work towards it with all you have, but more importantly, enjoy the ride in getting there. It is easy to get so focused on the prize of getting to vet school that 3 or 4 years of your life go by in a flurry of stress and anxiety and you are left asking “where did the time go?” That thought was one that crossed my mind several times throughout my first year of veterinary school. Trust me when I say that there will be time to stress out and be insanely busy when you are in vet school. Work towards and focus on your dream a DVM, but don’t forget that it is a long journey and to take time to take in all the steps.
