Am I passionate about animals and veterinary medicine? Is it something I can’t live without, something I can just put away and not regret not pursuing? Not that I ever really doubted this, but I found my answer on an adventurous Sunday afternoon to end my summer with a bang–though thankfully no literal bang!
My family is very used to my animal-rescuing antics. Frequent phrases growing up, “Mom, can I please save this dog?” or “Dad, can we foster a horse?” They have always put up with me, and I do believe as a family we’ve changed some animals’ lives for the better. So when my mom, my sister, and I were driving down a twisty, busy road and saw a horse running loose, you can bet they knew exactly what was coming next.
Mom started to pull over and as the car was still moving, I was out and running down the middle of the road so as to warn cars to slow down and quite possibly grant myself a death wish. I sprinted to try and catch up with the very frantic, loose horse and, in my pursuit, was picked up by some strangers who were also trying to catch the horse. I instructed them how to herd her using their car, and when we had her in a good spot, I foung myself jumping out of yet another moving vehicle to catch her. Thankfully, she was pretty tired at that point, so it didn’t take much sweet talking for her to let me grab her halter. Her very appreciative owners found us and explained they had just brought her home and, not an hour at her new barn, she had jumped the fence. Now they learned that they have a potential show jumper, and I verified that I’m madly in love with animals enough to do all that crazy stuff!
