It seems like a long time ago, but it’s been only two years since I was preparing to start vet school. It was a hectic time and so very exciting — I could barely wait to start! I see that same enthusiasm, excitement, and eagerness in students who have been accepted over the last few months. Many are asking what can we be studying, doing, learning, etc, to prepare for vet school. Some are even counting the days until it starts.
My advice to these students is enjoy the moment! That summer before vet school is a wonderful time. You don’t have any pressures from vet school bearing down on you yet, and you’ve already graduated from undergrad. Take that summer and maybe get a part-time job or do some shadowing of veterinarians, but more importantly enjoy yourself. Enjoy some time with family and friends, because all too soon there won’t be any free time. Read a good book just for fun. Stay up late because you can, and then sleep late the next morning. Be spontaneous!
Vet school will be here soon enough, and while it will have its fun times, it will also be draining, exhausting, challenging, and so much more. It will go fast, and you will be working as a veterinarian before you know it, wondering where the time went. I already marvel at how fast time is flying. Enjoy a summer without pressure or a lot of commitment. There won’t be many like it in your future, so make this one count. Vet school will be here before you know it!
