Now that every month, week, day, hour, minute, second, and so on is named for something (sorry for the sarcasm), we always have something to celebrate, remember, or take part in. While I’m a big fan of National Cheese Day, I can recognize that there are some more important causes in this world that we need to look into and support. One of these would be Adopt a Shelter Dog month, which happens to be October!
I’ve talked before in a couple blogs about my beagle, whom I adopted. As long as you’re providing an animal with a new lease on life, you’re doing a great thing. I’m not going to go into the argument of purchasing vs. adopting, but I do have a couple of tips. Rather than buying a puppy from a breeder for a specific purpose, go through breed specific rescues who may have just what you’re looking for already! Don’t want a puppy? Go to your nearest shelter and find an older dog. They need homes, too! Don’t get me wrong, some breeders do an amazing job ensuring the puppies they sell are in tip top shape, but you don’t always know what you’re going to get regardless of what you pay, so adoption is great!
Reasons I would adopt again, because of Joy:
- This dog has taught me more patience than I could have ever learned from anything else. Small things like the wind, or people walking outside, or looking at her funny could send her into a fit of anxiety. Working through this has been quite the struggle but completely worth it in the end.
- It’s amazing to see the progress she’s made. If I think about where she was a year ago versus how she is today, it makes me so proud that we’ve come this far together.
- Dogs fill your heart with love. Coming home without a dog wagging its tail at the door is just not the same. Sleeping in a bed without a beagle trying to push you off is just no fun! Having a friend to go for walks with is nice, and a little beagle nose to kiss is perfect.
- You’re literally saving lives. Every year, thousands of animals lose their lives to overcrowding in shelters, yet we keep breeding more. Any animal you can take into your home is room for one more to stay!
If you’ve been on the fence, get out there and adopt! A wagging tail will be waiting for you!
