Here I am, just doing what I do best – procrastinating. In less than a week, I will be flying to Southeast Asia to begin my veterinary volunteer trip. Six days left and I still feel anxious that I am not totally prepared. I have yet to begin packing. I still need to get some last minute supplies and my passport photos. Most of the major work is done, but I’m finding it difficult to summon the motivation to do the last bit. It may be that I am just spending too much time daydreaming about the next two months.
In the past few weeks, I have gotten numerous vaccinations, stocked up on enough medications to fill a pharmacy, and purchased a backpack that is almost as big as I am. I will be living out of my pack and will need enough supplies to last the entire trip. Along with all my personal belongings are tons of medical supplies to donate to each of our placements. I hope to be able to offer something to each placement along the way.
This trip is truly going to be a life-changing opportunity. I cannot wait to experience all that Southeast Asia has to offer. Ever since I left the clinical setting and stepped into the role of a student there has been something missing. I believe that this volunteer trip will help remind me of my purpose as a future veterinarian. I am so excited to immerse myself into new cultures and help as many animals and people as possible.
